Join Associate Artist John Hicks for this Basic Intarsia Class project to make a segmented 3D multi-colored Fish! Intarsia is a woodworking technique that uses varied shapes, sizes, and species of wood fitted together to create a mosaic-like picture with an illusion of depth. Intarsia is created through the selection of different types of wood, using their grain pattern and coloring to create variations in the pattern. After selecting the specific woods to be used within the pattern, each piece is then individually cut, shaped, and finished. Areas of the pattern are sometimes raised to create more depth. Once the individual pieces are complete, they are fitted together like a jig-saw puzzle and glued to a wooden backer-board, cut to the outline of the pattern, often with the intention of creating a three-dimensional effect.

Students will learn skills in Scroll Saw usage, filing and sanding, application of color, and assembly of the final work of art. This is a hands on class with power tools. It is for students 18 years old or older (16 with an adult.)
